An Unusual Friendship

An Unusual Friendship

Despite a significant language barrier, Dante and refugee Soung Oo forge a best friendship. (NYT / KarmaTube)

This story starts as a tale with two youngsters’ friendship and then broadens to embrace wider community issues. Two fourth graders, one from Burma with dwarfism, bond with the ease and openness children so often display. Ever so subtly the story widens to address the complex issues of immigrants coming to the International Community School in Decatur, GA. Questions arise regarding who is welcome in the community and how many resources should go to the new arrivals. Through it all the boys show how uncomplicated getting along can be.
