The Last Goodbye

The Last Goodbye

In this powerful story of assisted suicide, a doctor explains his decision to travel to Switzerland to legally end his life with dignity.

While long projects and feature films have presented the story of assisted suicide, this powerful three-minute story from the Sydney Morning Herald carries a serious emotional impact. This occurs because accompanying the pictures of 79-year-old Dr. John Elliott, we have his final statement read by his wife. The doctor explains his decision to go to Switzerland to end his life with dignity. Though suffering from cancer, Dr. Elliott insists he is neither depressed nor sad about his condition. Instead, he wants to end his life legally and communicate to political forces back home the importance of allowing people choice at the end of life. Difficult to watch, yet well told.
