Going For the Record

Wheelchair athlete Aaron Fotheringham backflips his way into the Guinness Book of World Records. (Las Vegas Sun)

Aaron Fotheringham was born with Spina Bifida and started playing around at his local skate park in his wheelchair when he was 8. Fotheringham first tried a back flip because he says he was bored with all of his other tricks. At 16, Fotheringham attempts to set a Guinness Book of World Record for the wheelchair back flip.

The Las Vegas Sun video follows Fotheringham at practice, with his girlfriend, and on the day of his record attempt.

Since setting his record, Fotheringham has gained more attention after receiving $20,000 from an entrepreneur on Fox’s reality television show, “Secret Millionaire.” Fotheringham plans to use the money to start a company to help other disabled kids compete in wheelchair athletics. He wants to name the business the Hard Core Sitting Company.

This video won first place in the National Press Photographers Association’s Best of Photojournalism 2009 sports video category.
