Nominees: Toys Battle for Hall of Fame Spot
The Strong National Museum of Play in Rochester, NY is home to the National Toy Hall of Fame, which to date has inducted 41 toys. Honorees include classics both generic (kite) and commercial (Raggedy Ann).
On the eve of the selection of three new permanent entrants, the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle offers a lighthearted video ode to the dozen contenders. They range from the generic (paper airplane, playing cards, balls, sidewalk chalk, the toy tea set) to the commercial (Big Wheel, Cabbage Patch Kids, Game of Life, Hot Wheels, Nintendo Game Boy, Rubik's Cube, and Transformers).
While this video lacks a narrative or even characters, its playful tone and style -- and even the energized background instrumental music track -- are perfectly suited for the subject matter. Because a toy must be at least 20 years old for consideration, the video also serves as an exercise in nostalgia.
