Against All Odds

Against All Odds

Continents and cultures apart, disabled athletes Emmanuel Yeboah and Jim MacLaren overcome tremendous obstacles and forge a mutually inspirational friendship. (KarmaTube)

Jim MacLaren was an All-American athlete with a future that knew no bounds. At 22, his life was changed dramatically when he was hit by a bus and lost a leg. He overcame his physical limitations and become a top Ironman triathlete. But 8 years later, Jim had another accident and questioned if he could bear to try to recover yet again.

When his life intersected with Emmanuel Ofosu Yeboah, a disabled man from Ghana, MacLaren began to find some meaning in his suffering.

Yeboah was born without a tibia in his right leg in a country where a disabled baby is considered a curse. But his mother was determined that he should live an active and healthy life and Yeboah grew up to be a symbol of hope and inspiration in his country.

This KarmaTube video tells the story of two courageous men, continents apart, who find ways of overcoming incredible physical obstacles and the odds set against them. MacLaren and Yeboah met through the work of the Challenged Athletes Foundation and have come to form a friendship based on mutual admiration and inspiration.

The mission of the Challenged Athletes Foundation is “to make sure that people with physical challenges have the same freedom to enjoy sports that the rest of us take for granted.”
