A Family at Play

A Family at Play

A couple and their 2 kids spend most days in Neverland as they rehearse together for a local production of Peter Pan. (Rochester Democrat and Chronicle)

It was an unexpected turn of events that resulted in all four members of the Beckwith-Cohen family being cast in the Rochester Children’s Theatre production of Peter Pan. Jodi Beckwith had always wanted to play Peter and her children Ethan, 9, and Tali, 6 were to be part of the children’s chorus. When their father Stefan Cohen brought the kids to auditions, he was convinced to try out himself and was eventually cast as Captain Hook.

This three-part video by the Democrat and Chronicle captures the challenges faced by the family as they juggle school, work and daily rehearsals for the upcoming play.

Interviews with the parents provide insight into their feelings about immersing themselves in their characters and at the same time watching out for their kids. At one point Jodi calls the chaotic schedule “stupidly insane,” but the adventure of acting together is also a way for the family to play and share a love of performing.
